JCoOC (pronounced “J-Cook”) offers substantive Jewish programming on an a-la-carte basis in different areas of Orange County, based on where there is interest, need and emerging community leadership.
These programs are created both independently and in collaboration with other local and national Jewish organizations and fall into five categories:
Shabbat and Holidays
We offer a range of programs for celebrating Shabbat, High Holidays and occasional other Jewish holidays. We invite our participants to “pray your way” with a choice of creative-traditional services held in non-traditional venues and alternative programming — healing and wholeness workshops, text study, expressive movement and even a Rosh Hashanah apple-picking adventure or nature hike — designed to celebrate holy times on the Jewish calendar.
We believe in lifelong education and offer opportunities for both children and adults to engage in small-group learning in comfortable, interactive settings. Our learning programs change substantially from year to year as we modify them to meet the needs and make-up of each cohort. We also help craft customized Jewish ceremonies that match the unique background, knowledge and interests of children and adults seeking b’nai mitzvah or other lifecycle events.
Cooperative Social Justice Initiatives
We connect volunteers and activists with social justice projects and resources. Our current social justice efforts focus on educating the public and making a difference on two critical issues — Homelessness in Orange County and the Syrian Refugee Crisis. Our social justice initiatives are accomplished in cooperation with Jewish, interfaith and other- faith organizations.
Grief, Healing and Recovery
We seek to provide support in a Jewish spiritual context to those coping with loss, in recovery from addiction and otherwise seeking healing and wholeness. From a chaplain-led bereavement group to Shabbat afternoon learning based on the 12 Steps to healing and wholeness sessions at High Holidays, we seek to help people connect with their Judaism where they may need it the most.
Jewish Arts Enrichment
We offer opportunities to connect with Judaism through artistic expression as well as to experience and enjoy Jewish performance and art.
We are committed to collaboration with both Jewish and other-faith / interfaith partners (see “Our Partnerships”), because we believe that collaborative efforts and cooperation between organizations creates the greatest number of opportunities for people to engagement in Jewish life in Orange County.
